Polycystic Ovarian Disease, also known as PCOD is a condition affecting women where small cysts are developed in the ovary. In many patients suffering from PCOD, multiple cysts develop in the ovaries. Although not dangerous, these cysts can cause hormonal imbalance. The cysts are formed due to the disruptions in the regular hormonal cycle of women. High amounts of androgen and estrogens are produced when the ovary is enlarged. Also known as the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or the Stein-Leventhal syndrome, this condition can also affect ovulation and result in infertility.

CAUSES OF Polycystic Ovarian (PCOS)

PCOS is caused due to the imbalances in the hormones. High levels of androgen than the normal amount can interfere with the releasing of the egg. Androgen is the male hormone which is produced in the female body in small amounts. When the amount of androgen in the blood increases, acne, and hair growth also increases.

The high amount of insulin in the blood can also lead to Polycystic Ovarian (PCOS). Insulin is the hormone responsible for changing the food you eat into energy. Sometimes, the body’s cells do not respond normally to insulin. This causes the insulin levels to be higher than the normal. Over time, the high amount of insulin can lead to type-2 diabetes in the patients. Many patients who have insulin resistance were found to have PCOS. Apart from these unhealthy eating habits, obese or overweight body and diabetes were also found to cause PCOS. Patients with a family history of PCOS are also likely to develop PCOS.
